Before property, there was surf. James was a “semi professional” surfer — his quotation marks, not ours — and while he retired from that some time ago, he never lost the habit of reading a swell properly before committing to it. It is, as it turns out, a transferable skill.
James is a co-founder of The Move and the Managing Partner of Salvo, where he’s spent close to 15 years. A chartered accountant and a qualified architect, he brings 23 years in real estate development and investment, and has delivered more than 4,000 apartments and 200,000 sqm of retail and office space with a total value of over $3.5 billion, along with the acquisition of multiple businesses.
Outside the office James is the proud father of four daughters, which he’ll tell you is its own form of extreme sport, and a devoted student of Nando’s, extra spicy.
“I’ve sat on the developer’s side of the table for 23 years,” says James. “I know what a feasibility has to hold, so when we take a project on we’re protecting the margin, not just selling the stock.”
